This annual event starts with a cocktail and dinner reception , followed by an inspiring program and award presentation ending with a dessert reception. Jeffrey Flaks, President and CEO of Hartford Healthcare, will receive ADL’s prestigious Torch of Liberty that evening. This award honors “outstanding citizens who contribute to building strong communities that are open to all people without regard to race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation.” The featured speaker is Megan Phelps-Roper, who has a popular TED Talk, a major New Yorker profile and a recently release memoir - Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church just published in October 2019. She will share about growing up as a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, the Topeka, Kansas church known internationally for its daily public protests against members of the LGBT community, Jews, the military and countless others and why she left the church and her entire way of life in November 2012.
