The Passport to Israel program helps families provide their teen or young adult with a meaningful and educational Israel experience with his or her peers. It is a cooperative savings plan in which families and local synagogue partners contribute funds over time toward the cost of an educational program in Israel for participating students.
The program is administered by the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford through the Commission on Jewish Education and Leadership, and funds are invested through the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford.

Facts at a Glance

  • Jewish students in Kindergarten through Grade 10 are eligible.
  • Participating families deposit a minimum of $200 per child annually. That deposit is matched by a $50 per year contribution from the Jewish Federation and a $50 per year contribution from participating synagogues. Participating congregations include:     
    • Beth David Synagogue, West Hartford
    • Beth El Temple, West Hartford
    • Congregation Agudas Achim, West Hartford
    • Congregation Beth Israel, West Hartford
    • Congregation Kol Haverim, Glastonbury
    • B’nai Tikvoh Sholom, Bloomfield
    • Kehilat Chaverim, West Hartford
    • Beth Sholom B’nai Israel, Manchester
    • Temple Sinai, Newington
    • The Emanuel Synagogue, West Hartford
  • Participating students must select an Israel program from among those approved by the Passport to Israel Committee. (Eighth-grade day school trips qualify. Other approved trips include NFTY, USY, NCSY, Young Judaea, Camp Ramah, B’nai Brith, and more.)

Upon returning from their Israel trip, students are strongly encouraged to contribute 25 hours of community service (tikkun olam) within 12 months of completing the trip.
